The Clarence Meditation Center is a small-scale new construction with one central primary space and adjacent support rooms. The leading concept, considering the use of this building, was the creation of a simplistic, minimalist spatial cube (equal length, width, and height), which underlines metaphysical aspects of usage as well as provides an open, courtyard-like interior space. This is further emphasized with transom windows (East & West) along the full-height curtain walls (North & South). The strong symmetry of the building is continued into courtyards to the North and South. The northern court is the entrance area with ADA van parking (the main parking lot is kept outside of the court to avoid a direct view); the southern fully enclosed court is focused on a central reflection pool, laid out for walking meditation and similar activities. While the interior is contemporary with modern glazing, the exterior is following the surrounding rural style with traditional board-and-batten composite siding. Further considering the natural setting of this building, special emphasis was given to controlled exterior lighting in order to minimize light pollution.
